"A next-generation sequencing study of arthropods in the diet of Laysan Teal Anas laysanensis" Co-writers: Carmen C. Antaky, Elizabeth N. Flint, Jonathan H. Plissner, Coral A. Wolf, and Holly P. Jones To inform mitigation measures to reduce bait ingestion during rodent eradication, we determined arthropod consumption of a critically-endangered species, the Laysan Teal. Using next-generation sequencing, we determined that Laysan Tea; frequently consume cockroaches (Blattodea), freshwater ostracods (Cyprididae), midges (Chironomidae), and isopods (Porcellionidae). Local and global stressors threaten the persistence of island ecosystems, with invasive species being among the most damaging, yet solvable, stressors. While the threat of invasive terrestrial mammals on island flora and fauna is well recognized, recent studies have begun to illustrate their extended and destructive impacts on adjacent marine environments. "Fatal fashions and caring actions: Florence Merriam Bailey and the rise of avian conservation" As a budding, young ornithologist, Florence Merriam Bailey (1863-1948) was appalled by the latest fashion trend common among her female friends and soon became involved in the rising bird conservation sentiment. However, bird conservation appealed to only a small, elite fraction of the American public—either the rich upper class or progressive conservationists. Through her writings, Bailey developed an important middle ground that incorporated both scientific arguments for conservation as well as moral and emotional ones, which not only made her oeuvre widely accessible, but in a practical way quietly spread the message of conservation to a much larger audience. Wolf, and Holly P. Jones Invertebrates are key to island ecosystems, but impacts from invasive mammalian predators are not well documented or understood. Given this knowledge gap, we studied terrestrial arthropod communities in the presence of a common invasive rodent (house mice, Mus musculus) on a subtropical atoll—Midway Atoll NWR. Here, invasive mice recently began to attack and depredate nesting seabirds, prompting a mouse eradication. Although eradication planning efforts are underway, uncertainty remains regarding the ecosystem’s response to mouse removal. Of particular concern is the spread of emergent wetland grasses whose root systems alter hydrology and structural stability of soils, modify ecosystem functions, and change community dynamics and species richness. Without effort, those graceful twin airfoils carry it up and away from the coral sands of Midway Atoll, out to the trackless expanse of the North Pacific. Some fifty feet in the air, still gaining altitude and speed, it banks sharply to the right and rockets back toward the sea. In the calm water between the waves, its wingtip carves an arc upon the surface—momentary evidence of its passage through space and time—as wind and momentum carry it up the face of the next wave. It is now not a question of when we will have a female president, it is a question of who it will be. In She's Out There!, noted documentary filmmaker Amy Sewell (Mad Hot Ballroom) and writer/editor Heather Ogilvie present a collection of essays from thirty-five young women under the age of thirty-five who aspire to become the leader of the Free World. As part of the thirty-five women featured in this publication, I contributed an essay recounting the struggles of growing up in a politically polarizing state but also becoming inspired to take part in the political arena, locally and nationally. "Dispelling the mirage of C4 driven drought tolerance in Poaceae: a phylogenomic study" (in preparation)
Co-writers: Matthew P. Nissenbaum, Sean V. Burke, Lauren M. Orton, and Mel R. Duvall Climate change is a key driver for adaptations in water use efficiency (WUE). Perceptions persist that C4 photosynthesis indicates drought tolerance. Here, we examined the interaction and evolution of WUE within Poaceae as it pertains to photosynthetic pathway. Unique to this study is the magnitude of taxa sampled, degree of intrageneric sampling, and complete plastid genomes (plastomes) used for phylogenomic analyses. |
